WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT
Fort Myers is an easy Florida getaway when you want beautiful beaches without spending your entire trip sitting in the sand. Sanibel and Captiva give you that laid-back island feel, Fort Myers has plenty of places to eat and explore, and a Mighty Mussels baseball game adds something completely unexpected to the trip.
What I loved most was the variety. You can spend one day barefoot on the beach looking for shells and the next night sitting in the stands watching baseball. It is relaxed, easy to explore, and one of those destinations where you can do a lot without feeling like you are following a packed itinerary.
SANIBEL ISLAND: SHELLS, BEACHES & OLD FLORIDA CHARM
If you are going to Fort Myers, make time for Sanibel.
The drive onto the island immediately changes the feel of the trip. Things slow down, the scenery gets prettier, and suddenly the only real decision you need to make is which beach to try first.
Sanibel is famous for its shells, and this is one place where walking the beach is part of the experience. You will see people doing the famous “Sanibel Stoop,” bent over searching the shoreline for the perfect shell.
Lighthouse Beach Park is a great first stop. You get the beach, views of the historic Sanibel Lighthouse, and plenty of shoreline to explore.
For a more natural beach experience, head to Bowman’s Beach. It feels less developed and is the kind of place where you can walk, shell hunt, and settle in for a few hours without needing anything else on the agenda.
My advice: do not rush Sanibel. Give yourself time to wander.
KEEP DRIVING TO CAPTIVA
Once you are on Sanibel, keep going.
The drive eventually brings you to Captiva, and while the two islands are connected, they have their own personalities.
Captiva feels smaller and even more tucked away. Turner Beach, near the Sanibel-Captiva boundary, is worth stopping at for the Gulf views and another chance to hunt for shells.
Continue farther onto Captiva and you will find the kind of colorful, relaxed island atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer than you planned.
If you can time your visit around sunset, do it. Watching the sun disappear over the Gulf is a pretty great way to finish an island day.
TRADE YOUR FLIP-FLOPS FOR A BASEBALL GAME
One of the most fun surprises of a Fort Myers trip has nothing to do with the beach.
Go see the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels.
We caught the Mighty Mussels playing the Tampa Tarpons, and a minor league baseball game turned out to be the perfect change of pace after spending time exploring Southwest Florida.
Minor league games have a completely different feel from major league baseball. They are casual, easy, family-friendly, and you can actually relax and enjoy the game without turning the entire day into an event.
There is also something fun about discovering a local team when you travel. It gives you an experience you probably would not have planned if you were simply checking off the usual Fort Myers attractions.
If the Mighty Mussels are home while you are in town, add a game to your itinerary.
TWO FORT MYERS FOOD STOPS WORTH MAKING
OAHU FRESH BOWLS
After Florida sunshine and beach time, sometimes you want something fresh and easy.
Oahu Fresh Bowls was exactly that kind of stop. It is casual enough to work into a day of exploring and makes a nice break from heavier vacation food.
This is the type of place I would choose for lunch before heading back out for the afternoon.
BURNTWOOD TAVERN
For a sit-down meal, we also tried Burntwood Tavern.
The atmosphere makes it a good choice when you want to slow down for dinner after spending the day exploring. It gave us something completely different from the casual beach-day meals we had during the rest of the trip.
That is usually how I like to eat when traveling anyway. Find the easy local spots during the day, then pick at least one place where you can sit down, relax, and talk about everything you did.
WOULD I GO BACK?
Absolutely.
Fort Myers works because the trip can be whatever you want it to be. You can build your entire vacation around beaches, spend your days exploring Sanibel and Captiva, catch a baseball game, find good food, or mix all of it together like we did.
For me, that combination is what made the trip memorable.
Sometimes the best trips are not about finding one incredible attraction. They are about putting together a few really good experiences and giving yourself enough time to enjoy them.
Dream. Dare. Dive.
